Many of the most important principles of living a healthy lifestyle have to do with one thing: Attitude. What we say to ourselves when we look in the mirror, whether or not we will accept defeat, how we continue forward when pushed one step back, all of these will either lead one towards success, or a much more difficult journey.
Here are five key strategies for empowerment:
1. Energy is a Decision
You are the master of your own mind. That means YOU get to make the decisions about what you do and don’t do. If you tell your body “Oh, I’m too tired. I don’t feel like trying. It would be much easier to sit on the couch,” your body will believe you and energy begins to drain out. But, if you tell your body “I can do this. I have so much energy right now. I’m getting my second wind,” your body will believe you. But, instead of energy draining, you will feel a surge of energy, from your brain to your body. Believe in your brain power. Your body will believe what you tell it, so pump it with energy, positivity, confidence, and belief in yourself.
2. Self-Talk: Use Your Mind to Transform Your Body
Negative thoughts are usually from that voice in our heads, telling us what we’re doing wrong. Instead of listening to that negative voice, focus on what you’re doing right instead. Too much time is spent finding fault, being our worst critics and harshest judges, and condemning ourselves over fallen goals. More damage can be done by our own negative thoughts than by anyone else. When we speak negatively to ourselves, we normally don’t move forward with our positive habits.
3. Change the Soundtrack to Your Life
We want you to think of this lean lifestyle as if you were putting together a music playlist. You can keep playing the same old songs on repeat, reliving past problems, past failures, past mistakes; all of which, fuel negative self-feelings and frustrations. Or, you can choose a new soundtrack, one that makes you feel good about you and your healthy lifestyle.
4. A Slip is NOT a Fall
The first question is: “Will you accept failure?” and the answer is: “No, never.” But, you may have no choice but to expect it as a temporary condition on the pathway of progress. Rather, the more important question is: “How will you anticipate failure and redirect resources to grow from the experience?” The answer is: ATTITUDE. Your attitude will directly affect your success. Every time you make a smart and healthy choice, you progress. When you have a setback, dust yourself off and get back on track. Over time, you become more resilient, stronger, and more determined to make your comeback.
5. Think About How You Feel AFTER the Workout
If you are having one of those days when you don’t feel like working out, and trust me, we ALL do, think about how amazing your body feels after a great workout. You have more energy, feel a sense of great accomplishment, are in a better mood, become more confident, etc, right? Remember this! A great workout can literally turn around the worst of days. It’s all about your attitude. Write yourself a journal entry about how you feel each time you finish a workout. Or, rate your energy on a scale of 1-10 before a workout and then after a workout. Then, you can visually SEE how amazing a workout can make you feel and get ready to move!
