Football season, my favorite "season," has begun!! The leaves changing, the taste of crisp apples, the smell of charcoal on game day are all things to love about fall!
But, what’s the first thought that pops into your head when you think about football pre-game tailgating? My guess would be beer, brats, potato chips, hot dogs, burgers, white bread, cookies, and potato salad, all of the typical pre-game foods!
So, how do you stay healthy without missing out on all the fun?
1. Bring your own food
All-natural, organic turkey hot dogs (nitrite free)
Whole grain/gluten free (whichever you need) buns OR take two turkey dogs with no bun- they’re 50 cals a piece, so that’s less than calories in the bun anyway!
Organic low sugar ketchup or use mustard
Healthy quinoa salad
Three bean salad with a little olive oil and salt
2. Eat BEFORE the game, not DURING the game
Eat before so you’re not starving during the game. Plus, once you're inside the stadium, there aren't as many healthy choices!
Have a snack ready to go for after the game so your blood sugar doesn’t drop.
If you NEED something during the game, share some Cracker Jacks or popcorn with a couple of people to hold you over.
3. Alcohol lowers your inhibition; so lower your intake!
More you drink alcohol, the lower your inhibitions, the more likely you are to say “whatever!” to eating healthy
Plus, there are a LOT of extra empty calories in alcohol, especially fall drinks like apple cider and rum.
Just be conscious of how much you drink and keep the drink calories low
So, you can still have a blast tailgating without sacrificing your healthy lifestyle! Plus, remember that it’s okay to have a little something special now and then. I don’t believe in deprivation, a serving of potato salad is not enough to derail anything. Just don’t go for seconds and thirds ;)
